LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-Malawi President Lazarus Chakwera on Tuesday afternoon, January 12, 2020 declared a state of disaster following escalation of Covid-19 cases and deaths.

Chakwera’s declaration comes barely hours after two cabinet ministers in Tonse administration namely Sidik Mia and Belekanyama succumbed to the pandemic.

In his national address Chakwera described the pandemic strike as a blow to the nation with 20 percent of people died from Covid-19 in just eleven days in 2021.

However the president has also declared three days of national mourning for Covid-19-related deaths including that of two cabinet ministers.

He ordered that national flags will be flying at half mast in honour of the ministers and Malawians that have succumbed to Covid-19.

Addressing the nation in a groomy mood, the President has called for unity in the fight against Covid-19.

“Let us rise together as one army and fight this pandemic,” said the president.

On Monday, January 11, 2020 Malawi recorded the highest Covid-19 cases of 452 from 97429 tests with 235 deaths..
