BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-President Lazarus Chakwera’s Tonse government has assigned the Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) to collect 1.3 trillion Kwacha in the current financial year from July to March next year.
MRA Head of Corporate Affairs, Steven Kapoloma, disclosed the development on Tuesday during a media training with Journalists under Blantyre Press Club about new tax measures the agency will implement.
Kapoloma confirmed that there is an increase of 28% comparing to the previous financial target of MK1.079 trillion tax revenue.
He said, “This year we have been tasked by government to collect K1.3 trillion in 9 months which is different to previous year’s target. For example, our target in 2020/21 financial year was MK1.079 trillion in 12 months.
“So yes the current target will be hard to meet but as MRA we are geared to meet the set target. We therefore urge the public to always comply in paying their dues,”.
The MRA Head of Corporate Affairs briefed Journalists during the training of the new tax measures they will implement in order to meet the target.
MRA is in the 2021/22 financial year expected to widen the base in which they operate to collect more revenues.
The government tax revenue collector has since put in place measures to curb smuggling as one way of meeting the target.
Among other ways, MRA will introduce the Block Management System and Advanced tax.
In the 2020/21 financial year MRA managed to beat the target of MK1.079 trillion.
