LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The Grain Traders Association of Malawi has urged farmers to exercise patience as they await the government’s announcement of official farm gate prices, amidst reports of some farmers selling maize to vendors at prices between K20,000 and K25,000 per bag.
The appeal comes as a response to concerns that some farmers are selling their produce at prices that may not be in their best interest, and which could have implications for the country’s food security.
In an interview with local media, Grace Mijiga Mhango, President of the Grain Traders Association, expressed concern over farmers selling maize with high moisture content at prices that do not align with government guidelines, warning that this could affect food security and ultimately harm the farmers themselves.
Mhango emphasized that farmers should be cautious when selling their produce, and should not be swayed by opportunistic buyers offering low prices, but rather wait for the government’s official announcement on farm gate prices.
The Grain Traders Association is calling on the government to set a grain price that considers farm input costs, suggesting a range of K1,100 to K2,200 per kilogram, which would provide a fair return for farmers and incentivize production.
Mhango also highlighted the importance of farmers adhering to quality standards, including ensuring that their maize is dry and free from contaminants, in order to attract better prices and contribute to the country’s food security goals.
The government’s delay in announcing official farm gate prices has caused uncertainty among farmers, who are eager to sell their produce and capitalize on the current market demand.
The Grain Traders Association’s appeal to farmers is aimed at promoting a more orderly and profitable marketing system, which benefits both farmers and the broader economy.
As the country prepares for the peak harvest season, stakeholders are urging the government to expedite the announcement of farm gate prices, in order to provide clarity and stability to the market.
The issue of farm gate prices has been a contentious one in Malawi, with farmers often feeling that they are not getting a fair deal from buyers and middlemen, highlighting the need for a transparent and predictable pricing system.
