BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-A group of Malawians living in South Korea, known as Malawians Living in South Korea and Associates (Malika), made their debut at the 8th Seoul African Festival, showcasing the rich cultural heritage of Malawi.

The festival, which celebrates diverse African cultures, has been running annually since 2016 and attracts thousands of attendees from African, Korean, and international backgrounds.

Malika’s participation marked a milestone, as Malawi had never been represented at the festival before.

The group’s booth featured an array of Malawian products, including Malawi Gin, Premier Brandy, tea, coffee, macadamia nuts, and traditional dishes like nsima with chicken and bonya. Crafts, traditional games such as bawo, and clothing items made from chitenje fabric and Malawi-themed designs were also on display.

According to Sthembile Mhango, one of the Malika organizers and a Master’s student in Intelligent Systems at Soongil University, “We were inspired to finally change that by showing that Malawi also has a vibrant culture and to share our identity.”

Mhango expressed excitement about representing Malawi on an international platform.

Settie Nswayo, a Malika member who prepared traditional Malawian dishes for the festival, shared her joy about seeing people enjoy Malawian cuisine.

“It was deeply fulfilling to see traditional dishes, especially nsima with chicken and bonya, being enjoyed and valued by so many people,” said Nswayo, a Public Management Master’s student at KDI School of Public Policy.

The Seoul Africa Festival aims to foster cultural diversity and global citizenship by introducing Africa’s vibrant cultures to Koreans and international attendees.

With thousands of attendees and diverse programs, including stage performances, booths, and experiences, the festival has become a significant event in Korea.

This year’s festival likely drew inspiration from past events, such as the 7th Seoul Africa Festival held on October 12, 2024, at Banpo Hangang Park, which featured a parade, talent competition, fashion show, and more.
