LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-President Lazarus Chakwera of Malawi and president Mokgweetsi Eric Keabetswe Masisi of Botswana held bilateral talks on Monday morning during Masisi’s one day working visit to Malawi.

Briefing journalists after holding the bilateral talks, the two leaders spoke on the need opening the diplomatic offices in order to foster their relationship.

President Masisi said the two countries are looking on the possibilities of opening long term diplomatic relations with Lilongwe a statement which was echoed by the Malawi Leader President Chakwera.

Speaking earlier Malawi Vice President Saulos Chilima stressed the need of strengthening the relationship which was being disregarded by the previous regimes.

In the press statement released by the ministry of foreign affairs, president Chakwera said both countries being part of the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) do share several areas of interest in development of their countries making the talks between the two leaders very important and successful.

The statement added that Malawi leader hopes to visit Botswana as one way of strengthening the relationship between the two countries which may see the two countries establishing diplomatic ties.

Malawian leader mentioned areas like mining, tourism, education and agriculture as other areas that the two countries do cooperate following bilateral resolutions of 2018, saying the two countries are keen to see them maximized through JPCC and AfCTA.

Currently Botswana is chairing the Politics, Defence and Security within SADC while Malawi is expected to chair the SADC from August this year.

Meanwhile president Masisi is expected to fly back home this afternoon.
