Malawi’s Flames U-20 in historic win into COSAFA finals

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-The Malawi Under-20 team, affectionately known as the Young Flames, has made history by reaching the finals of the COSAFA Cup after beating Zambia 2-1 in a thrilling semi-final match on Friday in Namibia

The match was a closely contested one, with both teams creating scoring opportunities. However, it was the Young Flames who struck first, with Mwisho Mhango netting a stunning goal in the 2nd minute of the game.

Zambia’s James Sibeene, equalized in the 39th minute, but the Young Flames regained the lead in the 70th minute, courtesy of same brilliant strike Mwisho Mhango.

Speaking after the match, the team’s head coach of Young Flames Milias Pofera,praised his players for their preparation and determination.

“It was a crucial match, but we prepared well, and that’s the main reason for our win,” he said.

“We didn’t play perfectly, but we got the result we needed. Zambia has beaten us several times before, so this win is all the more sweet.I hope President Chakwera can declare a holiday for this win,” Pofera added.

Meanwhile, Zambia’s coach, Aaron Kawanga, was left disappointed and frustrated after his team’s defeat.

“I didn’t expect to lose, but my boys lost concentration on the pitch, and that’s very painful,” he said.

“After this loss, we need to encourage my boys for the third-place match against Botswana.”he explained.

Despite the loss, Zambia will have another chance to impress in the tournament, while the Young Flames will be looking to bring home the coveted COSAFA Cup trophy.

Madalitso Safuli was named Man of the Match for his impressive performance on the field.
