MZUZU-(MaraviPost)-The Mzuzu city council workers has vowed not to go back to there work unless they are given their perks.

The strike which started some two weeks ago has paralysed city councils operations including waste management which puts the Mzuzu city on danger of the spread of cholera and related diseases.

Last week wensday,6th May 2020 the Mzuzu city spokesperson MacDonald Gondwe told Maravi post that by Friday May 8, 2020 all the operations will resume since their parent ministry, local government and rural development promised to help them pay the four months salary arrears to its workers.

But it is doubtful if the ministry will come to their rescue soon as spokesperson for the ministry of local government and rural development Muhlabase Mghogho chose not to say a word on the issue as she is asking for more time to comment.

According to the Mzuzu city councills spokes person Gondwe, “Efforts
are their to cover the payments as the council applied for bank loans to several undisclosed banks but it didn’t materialise.

“We asked for loans amounting to MK300 million but it didn’t work,we even reapplied after reducing the amount to MK200 million thinking that may be it was too much but still more our proposal was declined”.

Mzuzu city council spends about MK50 million to pay salaries for its workers per month.

But the council has not yet payed its workers for four months hence the strike.
