MZUZU-(MaraviPost)-Political and legal commentators have expressed their opinions on the judgment of the presidential elections case delivered Monday, February 3, 2020 in Lilongwe.

According to Chancellor College based political analyst, Dr Enerst Thindwa, the pronouncement of the judgment on its own, in favour of the petitioners is a clear maturity of democracy.

“This simply shows that democracy has triumphed. And that shows that our democracy is maturing. The court has pointed out the irregularities which were there and Malawians have also been satisfied with the judgment.

“In 1999 and 2014, the elections had some irregularities but those went unnoticed but this year, the court has displayed a wonderful gesture,” said Thindwa.

Concurring with Thindwa was a law expert Justin Dzonzi, who said what the court did yesterday is a clear sign that Malawi as a nation is a mature and standalone entity.

“I feel this is a big testimony that our nation has come of age and our court has shown that we, as a nation, can point out our anomalies and work on them.

“If it were a person, we would say that Malawi is a mature person who can take dicisions on his own,” said Dzonzi.

On his part, General Secretary for Evangelical Association of Malawi, Reverend Francis Mkandawire, has appealed to Malawians to respect the judgment and observe peace and calm.

Reverend Mkandawire said: “As Evangelical Association of Malawi, we would like to thank God for being we us from the day the presidential elections case started to date, but also that the judgment has come out in nonpartisan way.

“This shows that God has something in store for us. At this point, let’s all unite to respect the judgment and develop our nation.”

A panel of five judges which comprised: Justices Hiley Potani, Ledson Kapindu, Dingiswayo Madise, Mike Tembo and Ivy Kamanga, delivered the long awaited judgment which took them 45 days to compile.
