Mayaya to conduct demo without Malawi Police security

The renowned Malawi human rights activist Billy Mayaya has on Sunday announced that he will conduct demonstration without the police guard in Lilongwe on Monday.According to Mayaya, this is because the law enforcers have vehemently denied providing security to their demonstration.

However, he said this will not let them down with their plan saying everything is already fine.

“We know that this is government plan to frustrate us but what I can tell you is that we shall protest without the presence of the police,” said Mayaya.

“Why should they stop us despite informing them in time? This means that there’s somebody behind and that is government,” he added.

He said they shall present the petition to the Minister of Land’s office to make sure that itt reverses its decision.

According to Mayaya, the protest will consist of the members of the clergy, traditional leaders, concerned citizens and NGOs.

Despite passing the bill in Parliament, opposition parties, some NGOs as well as Traditional leaders among others argued that the bill has many loop holes that will affect poor Malawians.

For instance, they said poor Malawians cannot afford to pay fee to their own land as started by the law apart from the bill contradicting with the power of traditional leaders.

However, Minister of Lands Atupele Muluzi defended the bill saying it is the only hope for poor Malawians.
