MCM urges journalists

By Jones Gadama

The Media Council of Malawi (MCM) has urged journalists to prioritize their safety ahead of the 2025 general elections.

The call was made during a media training event held in Mzuzu, which drew journalists from the northern region and officers from the Malawi Police Service.

MCM Executive Director Moses Kaufa emphasized the importance of journalist safety, citing the increasing attacks on journalists in Malawi.

Kaufa stressed that journalists must take proactive measures to protect themselves, rather than relying solely on security agencies like the police.

“The media has a critical role to play in promoting democracy and good governance, but this cannot be achieved if journalists are not safe,” Kaufa said.

He added, “It is essential that we take proactive measures to protect ourselves, rather than waiting for others to do so.”

Kaufa highlighted several key areas that journalists must focus on to ensure their safety, including proper identification, risk assessment, planning, and the use of safety equipment.

He also emphasized the importance of media houses providing support and resources to their journalists to ensure their safety.

The training event was designed to equip journalists with the skills and knowledge necessary to protect themselves while reporting on elections.

The event also provided a platform for journalists and police officers to engage and discuss ways to improve their working relationship.

As Malawi prepares for the 2025 general elections, the importance of journalist safety cannot be overstated.

The media plays a critical role in promoting transparency, accountability, and democracy, and it is essential that journalists are able to perform their duties safely and freely.

The MCM training is a crucial step towards achieving this goal, and it is hoped that it will contribute to a safer and more secure environment for journalists in Malawi.
