Mining Sector to Boost Malawi’s economy -Ng’oma

LILONGWE Maravipost: Minister of Mining, Ken Zikhale Ng’oma, has expressed strong optimism about the potential of Malawi’s mining sector to significantly revive the country’s economy.

Ng’oma made the remarks during a recent visit to Lotus Africa Limited, the company set to restart operations at the Kayelekera Uranium Mine in Karonga District.

Speaking to Maravipost, the minister emphasized that Malawi has long overlooked the economic opportunities presented by the mining sector, choosing instead to rely almost exclusively on agriculture.

“Malawi has been wasting time concentrating on agriculture alone, while neglecting mining, which could have already boosted our economy,”

“Once production starts at Kayelekera and other sites, Malawians will begin to invest and benefit.”Ng’oma said.

Lotus Africa Limited Managing Director, Greg Bittar, confirmed that operations at the Kayelekera mine had been delayed due to company vehicles being held at the border by the Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA).

He said despite this setback, Bittar stated that production is now expected to commence in September this year.

Paramount Chief Kyungu, who was also present during the visit, commended the Ministry of Mining for its dedication and described the mining industry as a crucial solution to many of the socio-economic challenges Malawians currently face.
