Mozambican President Daniel Chapo arrived in Malawi today, June 5, 2025, at Kamuzu International Airport, marking the beginning of a two-day state visit aimed at strengthening bilateral relations between Malawi and Mozambique.
During his stay, President Chapo will engage in high-level discussions with Malawi’s President Lazarus Chakwera, focusing on deepening diplomatic and economic ties between the two neighboring countries.
The visit, themed “Fifty Years of Enhancing Malawi-Mozambique Diplomatic Relations for Shared Prosperity,” highlights the long-standing relationship between the two nations.
The talks between the two presidents will center on enhancing cooperation in various sectors, including trade, energy, and transportation.
A key highlight of the visit will be the joint launch of the Dedza One-Stop Border Post, a landmark development expected to improve cross-border cooperation and boost trade between Malawi and Mozambique.
The Dedza One-Stop Border Post is part of ongoing efforts to enhance regional partnerships and foster greater collaboration within southern Africa. The facility will simplify trade regimes, provide equal treatment of transporters, and tighten security to reduce the crossing of borders using uncharted routes.

This development is expected to further boost trading activities between the two countries, which have relatively low trade volumes despite their proximity.
During his visit, President Chapo will also have the opportunity to discuss the implementation of trade agreements signed during President Chakwera’s state visit to Mozambique last year. These agreements aimed to improve the energy sector, open up the Nacala Port for transporting fuel and petroleum products from Mozambique to Malawi, and reduce transportation costs.
The Mozambican president’s visit is seen as a significant step in strengthening the economic relationship between Malawi and Mozambique.
The two countries have been working together on various projects, including the Malawi-Mozambique Interconnector Project, which aims to improve access to electricity supply in Malawi.
President Chapo will depart on Friday afternoon, June 6, 2025, after the joint launch of the Dedza One-Stop Border Post.
The visit is expected to yield positive outcomes for both countries, further solidifying their diplomatic relations and paving the way for shared prosperity.
