My Cape Town: Armani “Mr Poppins” Minani

3 Min Read

You may have seen Armani “Mr Poppins” Minani hiking up Lion’s Head in a suit on viral social media videos. Behind the spectacle is a Rondebosch local using curiosity and conversation to inspire real change for township youth and the homeless.

He founded Reveal the Cape to Me to introduce township youth to the city, and Touching a Tummy at a Time to help feed the homeless. “I want to use my platform to motivate and encourage others,” he says. “A small action can make a big difference in someone’s life.” Here’s how he spends a typical day in Cape Town:

Hike Up Lion’s Head

For Armani, weekends often begin above the city. First up is a hike up Lion’s Head.

“The views from the top are totally worth it – you can see the city, the ocean, Table Mountain, and even Robben Island all laid out below,” he says as he gets to the top. The hike starts just off Signal Hill Road and takes about 90 minutes to two hours, depending on your pace and how many photos you stop to take along the way. The trail winds around the mountain, giving you views at every turn, before a short but steep scramble to the summit.

He has been hiking in his signature three-piece suit and umbrella since 2017. What started as a joke quickly turned into a way to make a difference. As he puts it, “When you’re on top of the mountain, you feel like you conquered the world.”

Food Trucks near the Sea Point Pavilion

After hitting the trails, you’ll find him chilling at the Sea Point food trucks, soaking in the views of the Atlantic Ocean. There’s a wide range of food trucks to choose from, with plenty of affordable options, making it a favourite stop for runners and joggers.

One of his go-to stops is Braai Master, where he orders a boerewors roll, then settles into one of the red tables to tuck in. The strictly halaal food truck also serves up shisa nyama, sandwiches and soft drinks. Before heading off, he treats himself to something sweet: a scoop (or two) from Iceziet.

Greenmarket Square

Greenmarket Square is one of the city’s oldest public spaces and a local spot known for its unique South African and African culture and pieces. Here, you’ll find stalls with clothing, jewellery, accessories, and art.

“I love browsing the stalls for unique bracelets and necklaces to add to my collection. There’s always something new and interesting to discover at this market,” he adds. The market is open every day, from Monday to Sunday, between 9 am and 6 pm.

Bree Street

Armani loves exploring Bree Street, one of the city’s trendiest streets. When he’s feeling creative, you’ll probably find him at Clay Café, turning a pottery piece into a masterpiece. If it’s more of a chill day, he’ll grab a coffee at Frank’s Café instead. He’s also a big foodie,

always eager to try new restaurants along the strip. Some of his favourites include Iron Steak and LIV on Bree, well known for its vibrant seven-colour feast on Sundays.

“If you’re visiting during the summer months, don’t miss Bree Street Sundays, a car-free movement where people skate, play games, socialise, and soak up the vibe together,” he says.
