Martyrs’ Day ( 03 March)-National Holiday in Malawi

Mzuzu-(MaraviPost)—The Martyrs Day, which is commemorated in the country on March 3 every year, will this year be just like any other usual day due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

According to Vice Chairperson for the organising committee, Mavuto Kaunda, this year’s commendations have been put on hold because government ordered no more public gatherings of more than 100 people and that government also wants to take up responsibility of all other public days such as Chilembwe’s Day and Kamuzu’s Day.

Kaunda said: “We received communication that from today onwards, government has taken responsibility of the event.”

While corroborating Kaunda’s sentiments, Presidential Press Secretary, Brian Banda, said it is the wish of President Chakwera to take responsibility of all special day.

“Yes, it is the wish of Dr Chakwera administration to make these special days national events: the Martyrs Day, and even the John Chilembwe Day and other important days, but I am told that discussions are still underway but it is the wish of the government and it is the wish of President Chakwera that all Malawians should be included as we participate in these important days,” said Banda.

3rd March is every year set aside by government to be the day on which Malawians remember their 31 patriotic forefathers and mothers who were butchered by colonists in the struggle for self rule. It is commemorated at Chilundu Point in the Northern District of Nkhata Bay and this year would mark 62nd year since the observation of the day started.
