Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) President, Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika, has expressed serious concern over the continued rise in political violence, which he alleges is being orchestrated by supporters of the ruling Malawi Congress Party (MCP), particularly in the Central Region.
Mutharika stated that despite the acts of political aggression and intimidation allegedly committed by MCP followers, the DPP remains steadfast in its mission to fight for all Malawians and ensure the country becomes a safe and inclusive place for every citizen.
He emphasized that he will not remain silent or be intimidated by the ruling party’s actions aimed at oppressing DPP members and suppressing dissent.
The former president took direct aim at President Lazarus Chakwera, accusing him of presiding over a government that marginalizes and mistreats fellow Malawians, despite Malawi being a democratic nation that belongs to all its citizens.
Mutharika said it is time for Malawians to come together and work towards building a better Malawi—one that is free from violence and rooted in unity and justice.
He also called upon the national peace and security committee, as well as religious leaders, to intervene and take active steps in promoting peace and restoring harmony across the country.
