LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The country’s civil rights group, Center for Democracy and Economic Development Initiative (CDEDI) has warned all teachers and health workers to desist from the temptation of enticing children to get COVID-19 vaccine without parental consent.
According to the statement signed by the CDEDI Executive Director Sylvester Namiwa CDEDI has appealed to the health workers to only administer the jab on children who have willingly accepted to be vaccinated.
“Most importantly ,are in the presence of their parents or guardians, otherwise forced vaccination is an outright violation of the children’s human rights,” reads part of the statement.
The caution follows what transpired at Nsalu Trading Center in Lilongwe this week, where the ministry of health officials launched the second phase of the COVID-19 express initiative.
Namiwa added that CDEDI officials have been on the ground on the area, and have observed that over hundred children got jab without any physical evidence of consent from either parent or guardian. Unfortunately the whole exercise depended on the children ‘s verbal consent.
He further stated the development brings the obvious fear that children being what they are and some of them might get vaccinated out of the excitement or peer pressure.
In his last statement Namiwa emphasized that getting a jab especially in case of children, should never be without parents consent.
The development comes after health ministry halted mandatory COVID-19 vaccines to public officers and media personnel
