BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-Minister of Mining Dr.Ken Zikhale Ng’oma says subsurface mineral rights belong to the government while surface rights belong to the landowner.
Ng’oma said this on Tuesday at the closing ceremony of a mining stakeholder conference in Lilongwe.
The minister stated that the government is reviewing mining legislation to address operational challenges.
“A key focus is harmonizing land and mining laws to resolve ambiguities surrounding ownership of valuable minerals discovered on private land,” he said.
Ng’oma noted that the government has learned valuable lessons from experts, mining companies, and community members affected by mining activities.
The Tuesday’s discussions centered on maximizing the benefits of mining for Malawi, ensuring Malawian participation, adherence to regulations, and the processing of minerals domestically to create value-added products.
