Cracks rock MCP’ South Africa diaspora wing over leadership fight

By Dorica Mtenje

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-President Lazarus Chakwera’s Malawi Congress Party (MCP) Diaspora Network based in South Africa is fighting for leadership which ended up abolishing the WhatsApp group for the network.

In written concerned letter addressing to MCP leadership which is in our possession, the RSA wing accuses Chalo Mvula,George Limbani and Mayinala for destroying the wing.

“A group of MCP RSA Wing which is affiliated to MCP Diaspora Network, has been abolished abruptly because of anti democratic leadership by the leaders mentioned above.

“Leading to this is the voters rights to ask for a referendum or vote of no confidence against the current Director Dr. I. Nkhata who seen as a man sleeping on the job,” reads part of the statement.

The letter adds, “When the members want him to show leadership, he goes into hiding. If member express views about the wing to move forward, or questions the vision of the wing, the Director goes into the inbox of members to shut them up instead of leading.

“Such leadership is strange as MCP is one of the democratic party in the country. As such members wanted the MCPDN leadership to address the issue of leadership which has crippled the wing for a long time”.

“But in protection of the Director against the Vote of no confidence / referendum Mr. Chalo Mvula and his fellow oppressive leaders have teared the group apart, a behaviour which is against the values of Dr. Lazarus Chakwera.

“The removals were done at midnight while everyone was sleeping, members woke up and found the group is finished. Such is a strange and poor leadership qualities of Mr. Chalo Mvula who is entrusted with a huge responsibilities of uniting MCP members in Diaspora, he does it by destroying a group at night second time in a month as he removed people at night completely finished another group of MCP Diaspora Network where current ministers are members,” concludes the memo.

But In an interview with Maravi Post on Sunday, May 8, 2022 Malawi Congress Party Diaspora Network (MCPDN)’s leader Chalo Mvula said the group has been abolished as old leaders are refusing to handover positions to the newly elected members.

Mvula added that as a leader he follows the ethics of the party and discipline those that are in disobedient.

Asked of being accused of dictatorship Chalo did not come out clear claims consulting the party leadership in his decisions.

This comes after a group of MCP’s RSA the group calls for referendum to force the current Director, Isaac Nkhata out of office as the grouping believes that he is sleeping on the job despite his tenure is expected to end in November 2023.

Pastors in Diaspora endorses Chakwera, as MCP diaspora Wing raises funds for election monitors

Pastor Chance Munthal

Submitted By Chalo Mvula

The Malawi Congress Party Diaspora Wing over the weekend raised money   through a gala dinner event to help the party allocate election monitors in all the polling stations at the forthcoming general elections. The event was held in the city of Birmingham in United Kingdom.  Malawi goes to the polls on 21st of May to elect the president, members of parliament and councillors. However, the highlight of the event was an endorsement coming from a group of Malawian Pastors living in diaspora who made a statement endorsing Lazarus Chakwera as the candidate of choice to be Malawi’s next president.

According to the spokesman of MCP Diaspora Wing Chalo Mvula , the Birmingham event was to cement the seriousness of the diaspora community in making sure that the elections are free and fair . Malawi Congress Party launched the Tambala Fund, an initiative that encouraged its members to contribute to the party and sponsor for a monitor. The Diaspora event was a response to that call and so far the diaspora community has contributed over £3500.  “It’s a collective effort and other diaspora members from USA, Republic of Ireland responded to our call and contributed something” said Mvula.

The event was spiced up by various activities that included a music performance by Nick Thindwa whose sang his hit song “Chakwera wa M’boma”  . Thindwa mesmerized the audience with his unique dancing skills .There was also a comedy treat from Scotland based Malawian comedian Khwethemu.  Patrons were also treated to an auction sale where various items were sold to the members of the audience and dinner dance provided by Powerglobal DJ, Gnice.

On the political front MCP veteran member Chris Chaima Banda received a standing ovation after delivering a moving speech on the philosophy of Dr Lazarus Chakwera and his presidency.  “Chakwera is not only just God fearing, but in him Malawians will be voting for a candidate who will fulfil each and every promise that is in the party manifesto. Malawians are blessed to have a candidate like Chakwera” Claimed Banda amid the handclapping and the ululation from the audience.

MCP president Lazarus Chakwera, while not physically in attendance sent a message which was read to the audience. Chakwera said he was humbled to see the diaspora community coming together  to support the party. He said he was assuring those in diaspora that Malawi  will soon give  birth to “A New Malawi enjoyed by Everyone” . Chakwera went on to acknowledge that the support of the diaspora and the many efforts of others can guarantee that the elections will not be rigged. He went further to warn that any efforts to tamper with the elections will not only be thwarted, but will also be investigated immediately after he is sworn in as the president.

And then there was the moment when  Derby based Man of God , Pastor Chance Munthali  stood up to read a list of  pastors living in diaspora  who have endorsed the candidacy of Lazarus Chakwera to be the next president of Malawi.  Pastor Chance Munthali said the pastors had settled for this choice after much though and prayer “ God has heard the cry of Malawians and He has Chosen Chakwera to rescue Malawi  from poverty, rampant corruption and to excute the rule of law in the country” . He went on to pray for the peaceful elections and for God to give Chakwera more wisdom.

Escalating political violence worrisome, we will engage international human rights bodies – MCP Diaspora Wing warns

Kalindo

The Diaspora Wing of the opposition Malawi Congress Party has condemned the escalation of political violence across the country as worrisome and something that needs to be addressed immediately. The condemnation comes amid evidence of opposition party supporters being roughed and beaten up and their vehicles being attacked.

So far, the blame has been put on the ruling DPP cadets although Police are yet to arrest anybody. “We are strongly condemning these political attacks . This is something we don’t need ahead of the general elections if we want the election to be free and fair. Malawi is a democracy and people have the right to support whichever political party they want without fear or intimidation, MCP Diaspora wing spokesman Chalo Mvula said .

There has been a recent wave of political attacks across the country. United Transformation Movement Director of Youth, Bon Kalindo was beaten up by alleged DPP Cadets, a few days later UTM supporters in Mangochi were attacked by DPP cadets as they were going to Namwera in the district to conduct a rally. In another incident In Blantyre on Sunday night, cadets severely assaulted Edward Govati for belonging to the MCP. The escalating political violence is also said to be the reason why MCP president Dr Lazarus Chakwera suspended his planned attendance of Chilembwe Day memorial in Chiradzulo. Social Media has been awash with photos and Video evidence of many of these attacks.

The Malawi Congress Party Diaspora has called on the DPP government to bring order and make sure that Malawi continues to be a peaceful nation . “ It is unfortunate that DPP leadership is not condemning the acts of its cadets, This shows that they have no respect for democracy and that these cadets are being intentionally sent in order to strike fear in Opposition members and supporters ahead of the elections” said Mvula.

The diaspora wing also had a warning for those perpetuating the violence saying they will be held accountable. “Nobody will get away with it – those who are behind these attacks will be brought before the courts , Dr Chakwera preaches about respect for the rule of law and those deliberately doing this will have to answer “ Mvula said . MCP diaspora wing has also warned that failure to act, will lead to the diaspora community engaging with the international community and human rights organisations so that the situation in Malawi can be monitored and action taken.
