MZUZU-(MaraviPost)-Treasury has announced that the 2017 Bingu National Stadium stampede victims will receive their compensation in February this year once Parliament approves it during the mid year budget review meeting scheduled to commence in the said month.

According to Treasury Spokesperson, William Banda, the compensation claim is subject to parliamentary approval before the Office of the Attorney General (AG) makes to payment to the victims through their lawyer.

“Yes, we can confirm that we received the request from the office of the Attorney General, now, what we are doing is that as per required law, we will take the request to Parliament during the mid year budget review. So, once the budget is approved by Parliament, then we will be effecting the payment; suffice to say that the payment is usually made through the office of the Attorney General and is made to the lawyer who presented the matter in court,” explained Banda.

At least 24 people including children were injured in a stampede that occurred during the national Independence Day celebrations on July 6, 2017 and eight of them died.

Subsequently, the victims sued the stadium officials for alleged negligence and court ordered that they should be compensated with about MK251 million.
