Uganda stands against foreign interference, declares two America citizens persona non grata

1 Min Read

KAMPALA-(MaraviPost)-Uganda has declared two American citizens, including National Unity Platform (NUP) international lawyer Robert Amsterdam, persona non grata over their alleged involvement in subversive activities.

The move is seen as one of the strongest diplomatic actions Uganda can take, signaling its stance on foreign actors attempting to influence political outcomes from abroad.

The Ugandan government accuses Robert Amsterdam and Jeffrey Smith of engaging in unlawful activities by lobbying foreign governments and international organizations to limit Uganda’s development funding, describing these actions as economic sabotage.

Officials claim the two individuals have supported subversive groups within Uganda, amplifying messages meant to incite unrest and delegitimize the state.

The declaration bars Amsterdam and Smith from entering the country, underscoring Uganda’s commitment to defending its sovereignty against external pressures.

Amsterdam and Smith have been critical of Uganda’s political landscape, with Amsterdam & Partners LLP circulating a dossier calling for punitive international actions over alleged post-election repression.

The Ugandan government views these actions as attempts to influence the country’s political outcomes, rather than legitimate human rights advocacy.

Both Amsterdam and Smith maintain their work is rooted in human rights advocacy, rejecting claims they are engaged in subversion or hostility toward Uganda.

The move has sparked concerns about Uganda’s diplomatic relations, with the international community watching the situation closely.

The declaration of persona non grata is a significant development in Uganda’s efforts to assert its sovereignty and protect its national interests.
