US Chargé d’Affaires Amy Diaz bids farewell to opposition leaders, calls for peaceful elections

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The outgoing US Chargé d’Affaires Amy Diaz has concluded her farewell meetings with Malawian political party leaders, emphasizing the importance of upholding democratic values and avoiding political violence as the country approaches the September 16, 2025, tripartite elections.

During her meetings with opposition party presidential contenders, including Peter Mutharika of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), Joyce Banda of the People’s Party (PP), Dalitso Kabambe of the United Transformation Movement (UTM), and Atupele Muluzi of the United Democratic Front (UDF), among others, Diaz stressed the need for maintaining peace during the electoral period.

“The envoy discussed the importance of upholding democratic values and avoiding political violence,” according to reports.

This appeal for peace comes as Malawi prepares for a crucial electoral contest, with multiple parties vying for positions in the presidential, parliamentary, and local government elections.
