Police at Jenda in Mzimba have arrested 19 Burundi nationals for allegedly entering the country without valid travel documents.

The Burundians were arrested on Friday night at a roadblock while traveling by bus from Mzuzu to Lilongwe.

According to Jenda Police Spokesperson, Macfarlen Mseteka, the bus driver, Jonas Kasawala, 46, and conductor, Maupo Nkhafi, 32, have also been arrested for aiding the illegal immigrants.

Kasawala hails from Traditional Authority Chilooko in Ntcheu, while Nkhafi is from Traditional Authority Chakhaza in Dowa.

The Burundians appeared before the Mzimba First Grade Magistrate Court on Saturday and were given a suspended sentence of one year pending deportation.

This development highlights the ongoing efforts by Malawian authorities to address the issue of illegal immigration in the country.

The arrest of the bus driver and conductor for aiding the illegal immigrants sends a strong message that those who facilitate such activities will be held accountable.

The police have been conducting regular operations to intercept and arrest individuals entering the country illegally.

This incident also raises concerns about the porous nature of Malawi’s borders and the need for increased vigilance and cooperation among law enforcement agencies to prevent such incidents.

The government has been working to strengthen border security and improve cooperation with neighboring countries to address the issue of illegal immigration.

In recent years, Malawi has seen an increase in cases of illegal immigration, with many individuals attempting to enter the country through unauthorized routes.

The government has been working to address this issue through a combination of enforcement and community engagement initiatives.

As the country continues to grapple with the challenges of illegal immigration, the arrest of the 19 Burundians and the bus driver and conductor serves as a reminder of the importance of vigilance and cooperation in addressing this issue.

The government’s efforts to strengthen border security and improve cooperation with neighboring countries are crucial steps in preventing such incidents and ensuring the safety and security of Malawian citizens.
