LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The country’s Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) says it will hold demonstrations tomorrow Thursday to demand an arrest and prosecution of Police officers who are alleged to have sexually harassed women and girls at Msundwe, Mpingu and Mbwatalika in Lilongwe in October last year.

Addressing the news conference on Tuesday in the capital Lilongwe, the grouping said the tomorrow’s demonstration is mainly targeted at the Police officers who acted immorally and professionally by harassing innocent women they were supposed to protect.

One of the the leaders of HRDC, Luke Tembo, said the officers have to face the law as nobody is above the same.

“These are demonstrations that we are demanding an expedited process in bringing to book perpetrators who sexually harassed women and girls at Msundwe, Mpingu and Mbwatalika some months ago. We understand that the Police had a press briefing in which they promised Malawians to conclude their investigation within 14 days. But we wonder where they have been all these months,” said Tembo.

However, while speaking at a press briefing on yesterday, Deputy Inspector General, John Nyondo, said the Police instituted a 14 day investigation which they are waiting to conclude before taking a determinant action.

Through its report, Malawi Human Rights Commission found out that about sixteen women and girls were sexually harassed by Police officers who were at the scene.
