Vice President Dr Saulos Chilima and development partners on Saturday raised K27 million towards the purchase of diagnostic machines at the Kamuzu Central Hospital in Lilongwe.
The money was raised during the Malawi Rider Golf Cup tournament, the first ever in the country.
The tournament took place at the Lilongwe Golf Club where the Malawi team led by Chilima beat the rest of the world team captained by the British Ambassador to Malawi, Michael Nevin.
Speaking at the end of the tournament, Chilima said he was very overwhelmed with the positive response from sponsors.
“I must admit, the positive response from the sponsors has made this tournament worthwhile and it is my wish that this tournament becomes an annual event,” he said.
“Winning the tournament is a great source of happiness to the Malawian team and knowing it is for a great cause, is even better.”
Chilima thanked the captain of the rest of the world team, ambassador Nevin for his support to the welfare of Malawians and government.
He also urged the public to have the heart of giving to the needy, saying it always made a big difference.
In his remarks, Nevin said he was happy that they raised that amount of money for a good cause while also having fun.
He said it was also his hope that the tournament would take place again next year and that their team would win.
President of the Golf Union of Malawi, Frank Mvalo said the inaugural tournament was a huge success as it had received massive support from sponsors, government and development partners.
Mvalo said they would immediately start the process of procurement of the diagnostic equipment like ex-ray machines and incubators, among others.
The Malawi team won with 40 points, with the rest of the world scoring 36.
Among the major sponsors of the tournament were Standard Bank, First merchant Bank, New Building Society, FDH Bank, Petroleum Importers, Metropolitan Health, Airtel, Nico Holdings, Toyota Malawi, National Bank of Malawi, Rab Enterprises, Old Mutual, South African Airways, Cross Roads Hotel and Honorable David Bisnowaty.
