ABUJA-(MaraviPost)-At least six people are feared dead following a jet crash on Sunday, February 21, 2021 near Nnamdi Azikwe International Airport, Abuja state.
The Minister of Aviation, Hadi Sirika confirmed the news in a statement.
According to officials of the Federal Ministry of Aviation, the Boeing 350 jet had reported engine failure at about 10.39am before the crash on Abuja runway enroute Minna, Niger state.
Sirika revealed that the accident appears to be fatal and firefighters are currently on the ground battling to put out the fire at the site of the crash.
The report by Punch said an official report is expected to be released after an investigation by the military.
Plane crashes are not common in Nigeria despite the history of the notoriously unsafe air industry in the country.
The last known fatal crash took place in October 2006 when Nigerian passenger planed with 104 people on board crashed with only six survivors.
On Oct. 22, 2005, a Boeing 737- 200 plane belonging to Bellview airlines also crashed soon after takeoff from the country’s main city of Lagos, killing all 117 people aboard.
