MZUZU-(MaraviPost)-Dyton Siyeni an expert in cooperative and agribusiness said this during a review meeting for the agriculture infrastructure and Youth agribusiness project (AIYAP) held in Mzuzu on Tuesday,July 14, 2020.
Siyeni said the platform which the implementors of the project has offered to the youths can deal with unemployment among the youths, if taken seriously.
Through the AIYAP project two irrigation schemes will be built at Kande and Dwambazi in Nkhatabay district, and some 146 youths have already been sent to Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (LUANAR) where they have been trained in agribusiness.
The AIYAP project officer Sangwani Khoza says so far he is impressed with the progress of the project although they are facing some challenges financially, and also running the project in an area where youths prefer going abroad looking for greener pastures and the other one being that most youths are not interested in agriculture.
“We are trying our best to motivate the youths so that they understand what agribusiness is all about and how beneficial it will be to their lives.”said Khoza
The 146 youth who have been trained in agribusiness will be given loans to help them establish their own businesses.
The five years AIYAP project which started in 2017 is being run by the Malawi government through the loans from the African development Banks.
