Suspected coup plotter from the Malawi Congress Party (MCP), Ulemu Msungama today broke into uncontrollable tears at Police Headquarters in Area 30 upon being interrogated for his involvement in a treasonous WhatsApp thread which has been intercepted by the State and has also gone viral on Social media…
Ulemu Msungama together with other members of the WhatsApp group had been discussing how best they can overthrow President Mutharika using tactics employed by Egyptians in 2011 when they forced Hosni Mubarak out of power.
The interrogation is believed to have lasted four hours and in the course of proceedings Msungama lost his cool when it was put to him that treason is punishable by very stern sentences. His antics however did not deter the CID officers from conducting their work to solicit the much needed information.
Others in the conversation include Jessie Kabwila, Lazarus Chakwera’s son -Nick- and his wife Rudo, diaspora organizer Gerrard Mzaza Nkhata and parliamentarian OB Chakhwantha. Msungama, who is challenging the results of Lilongwe City North East election, has been critical of the DPP-led government since he lost to Bentley Namasasu in 2014.
Police have said they will get to the bottom of this as it deals with matters of national security.
Just last month MCP denied strong allegations that linked them to an impending coup being planned with the help of some donors and civil society organizations.
