1 Min Read

According to reporting from media outlets, Malawi Congress Party’s Ulemu Msungama has been arrested and is currently detained at Kanengo Police Station.

Ulemu Msungama posted on his Facebook earlier without clarifying that he was at Area 30 Police station. It is very unusual in Malawi that detainees are allowed to carry mobile phones around.

The group of amateurs plotters had prominent MCP names such as Jessie Kabwira now said to be in hiding, son to Lazarus Chakwera, Nick and his wife Rudo Mkukupa Chakwera, Hon OB Chakhwantha, Ulemu Msungama and MCP organizer in diaspora Gerrard Mzaza Nkhata.

Msungama is the first to be arrested with likely to follow the rest of the people that were part of the WhatsApp group.

Jessie Kabwira who has openly called for Malawi President Peter Mutharika to resign was tipped off last night and she is in hiding. It is however unlikely that she will stay in hiding for a long time.

Supporters claim that they WhatsApp coup plotters were expressing their FREEDOM. However a prominent Malawi lawyer told the Maravi Post there are limits to FREEDOM of speech.

He believes the WhatsApp group were testing the limits of that FREEDOM.
