Malawi Police should have arrested lawless MPs and they were right in questioning Jessie Kabwira

2 Min Read

A Member of Parliament is caught red handed leading a group of amateur coup plotters and when the Police nab her Malawians blame the administration. What kind of country are we becoming? Lawless if you ask me.

To make matters even worse Malawi Members of Parliament chase the police at Parliament when they tried to take Jessie Kabwira the amateur coup plotter into custody for questioning. What kind of country are we becoming when even law makers refuse to respect the law?

The Malawi Police should have arrested these members of parliament who show no respect for the law.

Our Country is falling apart because of an opposition that has refused to accept the results of an election. Instead of accepting defeat they have connived to undermine President Peter Mutharika from day one.

Words like DPP supporter will be thrown around easily because we lack depth in our political dialogue. Hatred of a party and its region have led many to sink so low as to think violence will solve their problems.

Jessie Kabwira got herself in this mess. Any responsible government would have done exactly what the Mutharika Police are doing. The US that we all respect monitor Social Media for this kind of chatter and have locked people for life for the kind of group discussions that were going ON with this group.

Just because they looked amateurish in their using WhatsApp to discuss their seditious plans does not mean they were not serious. At the very least Malawi Police has the responsibility to question Kabwira and the group members she led. She now has a chance to explain herself. Yes Mutharika has accorded her that chance.

It was embarrassing to see Lazarus Chakwera celebrating the release of Ulemu Msungama and declaring victory. A true leader should have counseled young coup plotter Ulemu about better methods of opposing Government instead he chose to behave like his followers celebrating a criminal act.

Peter Mutharika needs to show backbone and prosecute these people to the fullest. For Ulemu Msungama bail was granted too hastily. As to Coup leader Jessie Kabwira they should have let her cool her heels in custody for a month because this is not a simple criminal act, but sedition which allows Police some liberties.

Granting her bail so fast will embolden them, especially when other people in their party treat them as heroes instead of the amateur law breakers that they are.

Peter Mutharika should treat all law breakers including irresponsible MPs with the full authority of the law.
