One has died in Karonga the northern part of Malawi while other four are receiving medical treatment at the hospital after cholera outbreak hit some parts the district.
Briefing the District Executive Committee in an emergency meeting on Tuesday, Karonga Environmental Health Officer Lewis Tukula said the incident occurred at Kaporo rural health center on30 December Last year.
Tukula therefore asked for immediate help from the well-wishers, claiming the district have no medical suppliers for cholera.
“It was on 30th December when the a Atupelo rural hospital in Kaporo the north of Karonga informed us that they are suspecting a four year boy to suffer from Cholera due to some related symptoms and then we refer the suspect to the central hospital in Lilongwe where the doctors have confirmed that the boy was affected by the disease,” said Tukula.
Adding that “ however when we followed up the boy’s case today morning we found out that his grandfather who also had the same signs was claimed dead yesterday while three other people within the village are also in a critical condition, and then we rushed them to the hospital for treatment in isolation room.”
He said “even though we have isolated the patients we are running shot of necessary medical suppliers to treat them such as HTH chlorine, IV fluids, cholera beds or tents to be used for isolation and many more.”
In her remarks the District Commissioner Rosemary Moyo pleaded with Non Governmental Organizations to offer help.
“As we have held the hospital is experiencing shortage of medical equipments to treat the cholera suspects hence everyone should put in effort as for the council tomorrow we will start clearing the markets and also clearing the drainage systems surround the town to avoid stagnate water which is the source of cholera,” she added.
Meanwhile the district vendors of the main market have since Monday boycotted paying revenue to the council demanding sanitary services claiming the trading center is hygienic.
