LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-President Lazarus Chakwera’s Tonse Alliance government has pardoned former Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) Commissioner, Linda Kunje who was serving 18 months jail term at Zomba maximum prison.
This follows Minister of Homeland Security Jean Sendeza writting Chief Commissioner of Prisons to release Kunje who is on the list of the prisoners to be considered for pardon during the Christmas Eve Season.
“You will recall that the above person was convicted and currently serving a sentence in one of your prisons.
“I write to further inform you that she is on the list of the prisoners to be considered for pardon during the Christmas Eve Season. I therefore write to instruct you to release the said prisoner immediately,” reads part of the letter dated December 6, 2022.
In August this year, Chief Resident Magistrate Austin Banda sitting in Zomba jailed Kunje and her official driver, Jones Tewesa to 18 and 15 months respectively.
Kunje and Tewesa were convicted for obstructing President Lazarus Chakwera’s convoy in 2020.
Kunje was one of the Commisoners who presided over the nullified 2019 Presidential Polls.
It is yet to known whether her driver Tewesa gets the same pardon.
