Malawi Congress Party (MCP) Secretary General, Richard Chimwendo Banda, has accused the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) of politically persecuting former President Bakili Muluzi during its time in power.

Speaking during a rally in Mangochi, Chimwendo stated that the people of the Eastern Region have not forgotten how the DPP allegedly harassed and humiliated Muluzi for 17 years.

He claimed that this prolonged mistreatment of the former president has led to widespread disillusionment with the DPP in the region.

Chimwendo argued that the DPP’s actions have significantly eroded public trust in the party among voters in the Eastern Region, where Muluzi remains a respected figure.

According to the MCP Secretary General, this shift in sentiment presents an opportunity for the ruling party to strengthen its support base in areas previously dominated by the DPP.

He emphasized that the MCP is committed to unity and development, and will not repeat the mistakes of targeting former leaders for political gain.

Chimwendo concluded his remarks by urging voters in Mangochi and surrounding areas to support the MCP in the upcoming 2025 elections, promising inclusive leadership and respect for all Malawians.
