BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-The country’s Centre for Human rights, advice and assistance (CHREAA ) is determined to decongest prisons amid Covid19 pandemic.

CHREEA monitoring and evaluation mananger Siphiwe Malihera said this during an interview.

CHREAA is facilitating a project called cum court whereby the court is moved from formal structures into the prison to try prisoners answering minor offences.

In such process some are released while others are given bail to make sure that prisons are decongested.

In additional CHREAA is also running Malawi bail project which aims at empowering prisoners who don’t have a capacity to hire a lawyer on their own.

Whereby basic legal education are given to the prisoners so that they can apply for bail on their own.
