LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-Malawi’s Under-17 girls’ team has been drawn into Group A alongside host nation Namibia and Comoros Island for the COSAFA Girls Championship.

The draw, conducted in South Africa on Thursday, April 10, 2025, also placed defending champions Zambia in Group B with Mauritius and Mozambique, while Group C consists of Zimbabwe, Botswana, and Lesotho.

Malawi’s head coach, Linda Kasenda, described the group as ‘fair,’ expressing optimism about progressing beyond the group stages this time around.

‘We failed to advance last edition, but we’re upbeat about finishing top and reaching the semi-finals,’ Kasenda said.

Notably, Malawi defeated Namibia 6-1 in the previous edition, but Kasenda cautioned against complacency. ‘We know how Namibia plays, but they’ll likely come harder at us this year.’

Football Association of Malawi general secretary Alfred Gunda emphasized the tournament’s significance.

‘These competitions are crucial growth pathways for up-and-coming women’s football players. They need to participate in major tournaments to mature and eventually join senior teams.’

The COSAFA Girls Championship will take place in Windhoek, Namibia, from May 10-17.”
