Deputy Minister of Local Government Joyce Chitsulo Passes Away

Malawi’s Deputy Minister of Local Government, Hon. Joyce Chitsulo, has died after collapsing at her house this morning. Minister of Local Government, Richard Chimwendo Banda, confirmed the news, stating that Chitsulo was rushed to Kamuzu Central Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Born into politics, Joyce Chitsulo was a prominent figure in Malawi’s government, serving as the Deputy Minister of Local Government, Unity, and Culture.

She was also a member of the Democratic Progressive Party and represented the Mwanza West constituency.

Chitsulo was known for her tireless efforts in chairing the Public Appointments Committee, where she led investigations into corruption allegations and advocated for improved sanitation and water management in Malawi.

As chairperson of the Public Appointments Committee, Chitsulo had been instrumental in holding public officials accountable for their actions.

In 2020, she took allegations of corruption against Francesca Masamba to the Anti-Corruption Bureau, resulting in Masamba’s arrest.

Chitsulo also published an article in The New Humanitarian highlighting the need for long-term solutions to Malawi’s cholera outbreak, emphasizing the importance of sustainable water, sanitation, and hygiene.

In January 2025, Chitsulo was appointed as the Deputy Minister of Local Government, Unity, and Culture, replacing Grant Ndecha as the chair of the Public Appointments Committee.

Her dedication to public service and commitment to fighting corruption earned her respect from her constituents and fellow politicians.

The cause of Chitsulo’s death is not yet known, and further details are awaited.
