….DPP candidate Maxwell Finiasi 505 votes
….MCP candidate Humphrey Rabeti 455 votes
ZOMBA-(MaraviPost)-The opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) candidate Maxwell Finiasi has won the Zomba Central Constituency Mtiya Ward local government by-elections.
According to the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) chairperson Chifundo Kachale out of the 6, 459 registered voters in the ward, 1 113 electorates voted representing 17.2 percent.
Kachale declared that Finias won the elections with 505 votes seconded by the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) candidate Humphrey Rabeti who got 455 votes.
UTM candidate Micah Mwalala got 66 votes whereas United Democratic Front (UDF) and United Party (UP) candidates Natasha Thewe and Theresa Kambale got 50 and seven votes respectively.
“The commission is satisfied with the credibility of the elections,” he said.
Mtiya ward became vacant following the death of Councilor Ramsey Kajosolo of UTM in June this year.
MCP defeat comes amid reports that it was over the constituency giving out handouts, initiating development projects ahead of the polls.
MCP which main partner in President Lazarus Chakwera’s Tonse Alliance government faces public discontent for failing to fulfil promises made during 2020 Presidential elections.
Under Chakwera leadership, Malawians are grappling with food crisis, fuel, forex shortages, high cost of living due to inflation and among others.
