In a historic political shift, Botswana’s 2024 general election delivered a surprising outcome that reshaped the country’s post-independence political narrative.
Despite the departure of both the Botswana Congress Party and the Botswana Patriotic Front from the Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC), the opposition alliance led by Duma Boko defied the odds.
Boko’s coalition managed to secure a parliamentary majority, signaling a decisive break from decades of single-party dominance.
The Botswana Democratic Party (BDP), which had ruled the country since independence in 1966, was reduced to a mere four seats — a political humiliation never before witnessed in Botswana’s democratic history.
With the support of the newly formed majority in the legislature, Duma Boko emerged as the president-elect of the Republic of Botswana.
He was officially sworn into office on 1 November 2024, marking the beginning of a new chapter in Botswana’s governance.
A more public and symbolic swearing-in ceremony was held on 8 November, reflecting the people’s desire for transparency and national celebration.
Boko’s rise to the presidency marked the first time a former opposition leader has taken power through the ballot box since the country’s independence.
One of his first appointments in government was Lesego Chombo, who assumed the role of Minister of Youth and Gender Affairs, signaling Boko’s intention to promote inclusive leadership.
As president, Boko articulated bold policy directions aimed at addressing social and economic challenges within the region.
Among his immediate proposals was a plan to grant temporary work and residence permits to undocumented Zimbabweans living in Botswana, a move that reflects regional solidarity and humanitarian considerations.
He also vowed to renegotiate economic agreements with global diamond giant De Beers to secure a fairer share of Botswana’s mineral wealth for its citizens.
In his inaugural State of the Nation Address in November 2024, President Boko outlined an ambitious development agenda focused on innovation and sustainability.
His government pledged to boost investment in renewable solar energy, and also championed industrial hemp and medicinal cannabis as new growth sectors.
Boko further revealed that his administration was engaging in talks with billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk to provide affordable nationwide internet access through Starlink, Musk’s satellite internet constellation.
This drive toward digital inclusion aligns with Botswana’s broader vision of embracing technological solutions to advance socio-economic development.
In March 2025, President Boko witnessed a landmark event in the country’s scientific advancement — the launch of Botswana’s first satellite, BOTSAT-1.
The satellite was launched from SpaceX facilities in California, USA, marking Botswana’s entry into the space age and showcasing the nation’s growing aspirations on the global technological stage.
Duma Boko’s early days in office have been marked by ambitious reforms and a clear desire to distance his administration from the conservative politics of the past.
With visionary policies, regional engagement, and technological optimism, President Boko has positioned Botswana on a transformative path toward innovation, equity, and inclusive growth.
