PARIS-(MaraviPost)-A French court has sentenced the Former French president Nicolas Sarkozy to three years in prison after finding him guilty of corruption.
Passing the verdict on Monday, judges found the retired 66-year-old politician guilty of trying to bribe a judge and of influence-peddling.
Sarkozy who ruled France from 2007 to 2012 was convicted for trying to illegally obtain information from a senior magistrate in 2014 about a legal action in which he was involved.
Sarkozy had firmly denied all the allegations against him during the 10-day trial that took place at the end of last year.
In his defense Sarkozy said he was the victim of a witch-hunt by financial prosecutors who used excessive means to snoop on his affairs.
His sentence includes one year in prison and a two-year suspended sentence and he has been given 10 days to appeal the ruling.
Sarkozy’s co-defendants, his lawyer and longtime friend Thierry Herzog, 65, and now-retired magistrate Gilbert Azibert, 74, were also found guilty and given the same sentence as the politician.
According to Reuters, Sarkozy is the second former president in modern France, after the late Jacques Chirac, to be convicted of corruption.
Chirac was handed a two-year suspended sentence in 2011 over the creation of ghost jobs at the Paris city hall to fund his party when he was mayor.
