ACB has arrested General Henry Odillo & Lt Col Clement T. Kafuwa for paying Thuso Investments K1.9bn without supplying services to the Malawi Army. The rumors About the General have been circulating for a long time and it therefore no surprise that he has finally been served.
The may be charged with three counts of abuse of public office contrary to Section 25B (1) of the Corrupt Practices Act, negligence by public officer in preserving money or any other property contrary to Section 284(1) of the Penal Code and Money Laundering contrary to Section 35(1) (d) of the Money Laundering, Proceeds of Serious Crimes and Terrorist Financing Act, reads part of the statement signed by ACB Public Relations Officer Egrita Ndala.
They will be taken to Court after the Bureau has recorded statements from them.
General Odillo came to prominence after refusing to go along with Mid Night Six taking over government following the death of Bingu WA Mutharika. Odillo refusal then made it possible for the succession of Joyce Banda.
During the Joyce Banda rule Odillo was one of her trusted people and many observers noted that the General appeared to have accumulated a lot of wealth. As has been the case with ‘Cashgate’ case the arrests are louder than the actual court cases and people do not appear to be punished for their crimes adequately.
