The Golden Peacock Hotel in Blantyre has partnered with the Center for Governance and Leadership (Cegol) to host the inaugural Blantyre City Public Speaking Competition for Secondary Schools.

The competition, which is at a pilot phase, aims to promote public speaking skills among secondary school students in Blantyre.

According to Khumbo Gwede, the hotel’s senior marketing officer, the partnership is driven by the hotel’s commitment to education development.

“We placed education development as one of the priority areas under corporate social responsibility,” Gwede said.

The competition will feature 30 randomly selected government, private, and mission secondary schools.

Cegol team leader Chimwemwe Kaonga described the partnership as a milestone in ensuring the success of the competition.

“The contest will be jointly implemented by Story Lab, an outreach program in the department of media and journalism at the Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences (Mubas) under the theme ‘Speak, Keep and Act the Vision of Malawi’,” Kaonga said.

The launch and preliminary round of the competition will take place on May 30 at the Golden Peacock Hotel, while the grand finale is scheduled for June 13.

Kaonga added that schools are still sending in confirmations of names of contestants, and if some fail to submit, other schools that were not initially considered will be engaged.

The competition is expected to provide a platform for students to showcase their public speaking skills and promote critical thinking, creativity, and confidence.

By partnering with Cegol, Golden Peacock Hotel demonstrates its commitment to supporting education and youth development initiatives in Malawi.
