1 Min Read

Minister for Foreign Affairs Gunnar Bragi Sveinsson announced that Iceland would provide UNICEF ISK 10 million (USD 75,000, EUR 66,000) in humanitarian assistance to Malawi in light of recent floods in the country. The floods are said to be the worst in Malawi, which has a population of 16 million, in 20 years.

The government of Malawi has issued a state of emergency and called on the international community for assistance following the floods which has left roughly one third of the country submerged.

Many people have died in the floods and more than 120,000 people have been displaced. Schools, homes and crops have been destroyed.

Malawi and Iceland started bilateral development cooperation in 1989.
