Innocent Kananji arrested for impersonating as Malawi Police Chief Meryln Yolamu in Facebook account

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-A 26 year-old man Innocent Kananji has been arrested for allegedly creating a fake Facebook account bearing the name and photo of the Police Inspector General Meryln Yolamu.

According to the law enforcers Kananji was arrested by detectives from Cyber Crime Unit at National Police Headquarters in Lilongwe.

He was allegedly using the account to trick unsuspecting youths with fake recruitment promises, in the process swindling money amounting to MK150,000.

Police investigations have also revealed that the suspect has different 13 Facebook accounts most of them bearing female names and pictures which are also investigated.

Kananji is expected to appear in court soon to answer the charge of cyber spamming contrary to Section 91 of Electronic Transaction and Cyber Security Act of 2016.

Meanwhile, the Malawi Police Service is calling upon any individuals who have fallen prey to the scam to report to their nearest police.

This publication understands that the suspect is said to have made donation to one of the police stations in Blantyre before committing the crime.
