ZOMBA-(MaraviPost)-Former President of Malawi, Joyce Banda, says if she wins the September 16 elections, her government will introduce a Cash for Work Project fund.
Banda said the funds will allow rural communities to take on development work such as road maintenance and receive daily wages in return.
Banda made the pledge atSongani, Senior Chief Malemia, where she was holding a campaign rally for the People’s Party (PP) in the Zomba Malosa constituency, where Edith Kachale Banda is contesting as a parliamentary candidate.
She said that if people vote for the PP in the September 16 elections, citizens will be given opportunities to do small jobs and get paid daily.
“The aim is to help people earn money to support their households and to reduce poverty,” he said.
The former president also said she plans to build one million houses for the poor and the elderly so that they can sleep in proper shelter and not be exposed to harsh weather.
Banda explained that this project will also create jobs for many during the construction phase.
On electing a Member of Parliament for Zomba Malosa, she urged people to vote for Edith Kachale Banda, saying she would bring various developments to the area.
“The PP is working together with Khumbo Kachale, Cassim Chilumpha, and George Mnesa ahead of the September 16 elections so that we can liberate Malawians,” she said.
She further stated that the PP manifesto contains numerous policies, including those focused on agriculture, education, health, mining, and others aimed at improving the lives of Malawians.
Banda also mentioned that her government would distribute maize to vulnerable people who do not have food, to help them avoid hunger.
Also speaking at the rally, George Mnesa, President of the Mafunde Party, said his party allied with the PP after being satisfied with how former president Banda governed the country from 2012 to 2014.
In her remarks, Edith Kachale Banda, the PP parliamentary candidate for Zomba Malosa in the upcoming election, asked voters to support her, saying she is the only one capable of developing the area.
She said that if elected, she would reopen irrigation schemes, upgrade the Songani football field into a stadium, repair bridges damaged by Cyclone Freddy, rehabilitate roads, and empower women engaged in village banking by helping them start various small businesses.
