BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-Joyce Mvula, one of Malawi’s most decorated netball stars, has officially called time on her playing career, bringing an end to a remarkable journey in the sport.

The Netball Association of Malawi (NAM) confirmed the development, saying the decision came as a surprise because Mvula is still active and considered an important player for future national assignments.

NAM General Secretary Yamikani Kauma said Mvula personally informed the association of her decision, making it clear that she had chosen to retire from competitive netball.

Kauma admitted that the association had expected Mvula to continue playing, especially with several major competitions lined up where her experience and goal-scoring ability would have been vital.

Explaining her decision, Mvula said she felt it was the right time to step aside after achieving a lot in her career and giving her best years to the sport.

She added that she now wants to focus more on her family and personal life, while also allowing younger players to get opportunities to grow and take responsibility within the national team.

Mvula last represented Malawi Queens was in December 2025 during the Africa Netball Cup, which was hosted in Lilongwe, marking what turned out to be her final appearance in national colours.

Over a career spanning 15 years with the Malawi Queens, Joyce Mvula established herself as one of the country’s most reliable and respected shooters on the African continent.

She also spent nine years playing netball abroad, gaining valuable experience in top international leagues and raising the profile of Malawian netball beyond the country’s borders.

Despite retiring as a player, Mvula has made it clear that her journey in netball is not completely over.

She revealed that if she returns to the sport in the future, it will be in a coaching role noting that she holds a Level Two Netball Coaching Certificate.

Mvula said coaching would allow her to give back to the game by sharing her experience and knowledge with young players coming through the system.
