BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-The Malawi Law Society (MLS) has distanced itself from the recent arrest of lawyer Bob Chimkango, citing a lack of official communication or complaint regarding the incident.
Chimkango, 43, was arrested and charged with two offenses: failing to comply with a police signal at a roadblock and driving under the influence of alcohol.
According to Limbe Police publicist Aubrey Singanyama, the incident occurred when Chimkango allegedly refused to stop at a roadblock, prompting officers to fire a warning shot.
A pursuit ensued, and a stray bullet struck Chimkango’s vehicle, causing minor injuries to his right hand. He received treatment at a nearby health facility.
MLS President Davis Njobvu emphasized that the society takes professional misconduct seriously and adheres to its Code of Ethics. However, due to the absence of formal engagement or complaint, MLS cannot comment further on the matter.
“We take issues of professional misconduct very seriously and adhere strictly to our Code of Ethics,” Njobvu said. “However, in the absence of any formal complaint or communication, we cannot speculate or comment further on this particular matter.”
The incident has sparked debate about the conduct of professionals in the public eye and the importance of upholding the law.
While Chimkango’s actions are under scrutiny, the MLS has reiterated its commitment to upholding the highest standards of professionalism among its members.
As the case unfolds, Malawians are eagerly awaiting the outcome and wondering what implications it may have for the legal profession and the rule of law in the country. The charges against Chimkango are serious, and if found guilty, he could face significant penalties.
The incident highlights the need for accountability and transparency, particularly among those in positions of authority or influence.
The MLS’s stance on professional misconduct underscores the importance of upholding the integrity of the legal profession.
Chimkango’s case will likely continue to attract attention in the coming days, and the outcome will be closely watched by the public and the legal community alike.
For now, the focus remains on the legal process and the determination of the facts surrounding the incident.
