Malawi Civil society demand more scrutiny on the sale of MSB

1 Min Read

Malawi CSOs demanding that the sale of Malawi Savings Bank need further scrutiny by parliament, Led by Billy Mayaya Handed over the petition to Parliament to Chairperson of budget and Finance Committee, Rino Chiphiko.

Civil society said Malawians are also against government’s move to clear toxic loans totaling K6 billion owed to the bank by private sector players.

They demanded that the loans should not be passed on to Malawians. The petition demanded that those who defaulted must repay their loans, failing which “their assets must be seized”.

DPP and government supporters however were glad to point out that the MCP involvement with the demonstrations leaked of politics. They even tried to say Jessie Kabwila was part of the leaders.

Receiving the petition, Chiphiko promised to deliver it to the Speaker of the National Assembly.

Opposition lawmakers claimed in parliament that government wants to hand over the bank to FDH Bank, owned by Thom Mpinganjira. Thom Mpinganjira is known to be close to DPP and Malawi President Peter Mutharika.
