MZUZU-(MaraviPost)-There was drama at Mhuju Village under Traditional Authority Mwahenga in Rumphi District when relatives of a deceased elderly woman, Gogo Nyahara, stopped her burial and carried away the coffin in protest over an unresolved dowry issue.

Gogo Nyahara, who died on February 6, 2026, had been married to the late Mr. Mazolo for over 50 years.

However, family members say part of the bride price was never completed, with a balance of one cow still outstanding.

Relatives of the deceased woman argued that, according to tradition, she could not be buried in her husband’s village before the dowry was fully settled.

“If the dowry is not finalised, Nyahara will be buried in Junju, Livingstonia,” one family member said.

Both sides reportedly tried to discuss the matter, but failed to reach an agreement.

The situation became more complicated because the husband is also deceased, leaving uncertainty over who should settle the remaining payment.

As time went on, the local chief ordered that burial proceedings should begin, saying it was getting late.

This decision angered Nyahara’s relatives. They confronted the chief, slapped him, and then took the coffin and left for Junju in Livingstonia.
