The Malawi government has issued a security assurance to motorists using Mozambican roads, following a series of attacks targeting Malawian drivers.
According to Charles Nkhalamba, Public Relations Officer for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, security has now improved, and the situation has normalized.
Earlier, there were incidents of assault on Malawian truck drivers using the Mozambican corridor.
However, Nkhalamba told MIJ Online that collaborative efforts between the two governments have led to a significant improvement in security.
“The situation has now normalized, and we are confident that motorists can use the Mozambican roads without fear of attack,” Nkhalamba said, adding that, “We advise motorists to report any incident of assault to authorities, and we will work closely with the Mozambican government to ensure that perpetrators are brought to justice.”
The assurance comes as a relief to Malawian motorists who have been using the Mozambican corridor to transport goods and services. The corridor is a critical trade route that connects Malawi to the port city of Beira in Mozambique.
Despite the improved security, motorists are still advised to exercise caution when using the Mozambican roads.
The Mozambican government has also been working to improve security in the region, particularly in the wake of attacks by armed groups in the northern part of the country.
In recent years, Mozambique has faced a number of security challenges, including attacks by armed groups and a devastating cyclone that hit the country in 2019.
However, the government has been working to improve security and rebuild infrastructure in affected areas.
The Malawi government’s assurance of improved security on Mozambican roads is a welcome development for motorists and traders who rely on the corridor for their livelihoods.
As the region continues to face security challenges, it is essential that governments work together to ensure the safety and security of their citizens.
As the situation continues to evolve, motorists are advised to stay informed and follow the advice of local authorities.
With improved security and collaborative efforts between governments, the Mozambican corridor is expected to remain a critical trade route for the region.
