Malawi Govt establishes teachers council

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-In a bid to regulate teaching profession in the country, the Ministry of Education has established the Teachers Council of Malawi.

This has been confirmed in a statement signed by Secretary in the Ministry of Education Chikondano Mussa.

According to Mussa,the council has been established according to the Education Act of 2013 section 57.

Among others, the Council is expected to perform the following functions:

a) establish and maintain in such form as it deems fit, a register of Teachers and a roll of Licensed Teachers.

b) take part in all matters affecting the education and training of teachers.

c) advise the Minister on any matter falling within the scope of the Education Act;

d) promote professional and ethical standards in the teaching profession; and

e) communicate to the Minister any information acquired by the Council relating to matters of education in general and Teacher
Education in particular.

It is comprised of nine members which includes Dr. Joseph Chimombo, Regina Sambakunsi, Matilda Kabuye, Father. Simon Mundisiye, Dr. John Kazembe, Bishop Wycliffe Chimwendo, Kwacha Kulemeka, Elton Chauluka and Dr. Foster Lungu.
