Minister of Information, Civic Education and Communications Technology Mark Botoman and Minister of Health Jappie Mhango have told the Human Rights Defenders Coalition HRDC that it is fake that Cabinet ministers are drawing hefty COVID-19 allowances.
The two ministers were speaking during a roundtable discussion with officials from the HRDC at a roundtable at the Central Office of Information in Lilongwe on Tuesday.
The ministers said the video clip circulating on social media capturing Mhango and Botomani purportedly discussing COVID-19 allowances is based on a fake document with doctored figures of up to K450,000 daily allowance.
A subsistence allowance for a minister is K70,000.
Reverend MacDonald Sembereka who led the HRDC delegation commended government for taking time to explain the matter noting that misinformation is counterproductive to national progress.
During the discussion, Chief of Health Services in the Ministry of Health Dr. Charles Mwansambo called on the HRDC to join government in raising COVID-19 awareness to disrupt the further spread of the pandemic.
The HRDC has since called upon various stakeholders to partner government efforts in the fight the raging global health pandemic pointing out that COVID-19 real.
